MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Luther C. McClellan, the University of Memphis’ first Black graduate passed away on Friday, the university’s Black Alumni Chapter announced.
“We are truly blessed for everything McClellan has done for the black community at the University as well as the University as a whole. His legacy will continue through each of us and we will continue celebrating his remarkable impact, courage, and legacy,” the Black Alumni Chapter said.
McClellan was a member of the Memphis State Eight, the first group of Black students admitted to the University in 1959. He graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, making him the Tigers’ first Black graduate.
In 2021, the University made him the namesake of the alumni mall on campus.
The Black Alumni Chapter annually provides up to three scholarships in McClellan’s name to minority students. The award recognizes students who have shown “outstanding academic achievement, leadership qualities and community involvement.”
