July 12, 2024 — The Office of Science and Technology Policy, through the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) National Coordination Office, has issued a Request for Information (RFI) on Digital Twins Research and Development. This RFI seeks public input to shape a National Digital Twins R&D Strategic Plan.

The Plan will serve as a national framework, guiding government investments in digital twins research. It aims to advance technology, promote early adoption of digital twin models, and support federal R&D coordination to address national priorities and accelerate agency missions. The Plan is scheduled to be released between mid and late 2025.

Responsible innovation in digital twins could provide significant benefits for the American people. This RFI seeks input to shape a comprehensive government effort on digital twins research and development across various domains, including biomedical sciences, climate change, smart cities, and scientific discovery.

Interested persons are invited to submit comments on or before 11:59 p.m. (ET) on July 28, 2024.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recently released a report Foundational Research Gaps and Future Directions for Digital Twins (2024), recommending federal agencies to initiate crosscutting programs to advance the mathematical, statistical, and computational foundations for digital twins and identify collaborative opportunities.

In response, the Fast-Track Action Committee (FTAC) on Digital Twins (DT) is developing the National Digital Twins Research and Development Strategic Plan, outlining the R&D priorities for digital twins within federal agencies.
