State officials encourage outdoor safety with summer heatwave around the corner

ST. PAUL, Minn. (GRAY) – A spell of warm weather is expected to arrive in Minnesota this weekend as much of the state creeps into the 90s.

“It’s heat, it’s humidity, and the combination of the two can be a little more fatiguing. So we’ve had some hot spells so far, they’ve been very brief, a day or two here or there,” said National Weather Service-Twin Cities Meteorologist Joe Strus.

According to Strus, that combination is enough to shoot the heat index higher than we’ve seen in a while.

“This is going to be the hottest that it’s felt so far this year across most of the state of Minnesota,” he said.

With thousands of Minnesotans likely looking to beat the heat, state agencies are reminding the pubic to do so carefully.

The Minnesota Department of Health has a page dedicated to extreme heat. On it, they recommend proper hydration and preparedness on hot days. People who are outside should know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially in those around them.

“Stay hydrated, keep the fluids going, take breaks, and, of course, as always, check on the elderly, those around you who may be a little more susceptible to this heat,” said Strus.

The Minnesota DNR also recommends that people keep water safety top of mind, especially if they plan to hit the lake to cool off.

“Whether you’re swimming or out on a boat, the sun can definitely hit you differently. Make sure you’re staying hydrated. And also, you know, if you’re heading out to the beach, go to areas where there are designated swim areas,” said Lisa Dugan, Boat and Water Safety Outreach Coordinator with the DNR.

Dugan says even when the focus is on the summer heat, proper boating safety is extremely important, especially if there’s high traffic on the water.

“Whether you’re out on your pontoon or paddle boat, you need to have that life jacket with you, and preferably wearing it,” she said.

Dugan also issued a reminder that boating should be done sober.

“You’re putting yourselves at risk. Those on your boat, your loved ones, and everyone else on the water around you at risk. So, you know, save the alcohol for afterward. Save it for the shore,” she said.

NWS Twin Cities says there’s also a possibility of thunderstorms, so it’s important check the forecast before heading out on the weather.
