State educates vulnerable populations about fraud

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – Louisiana is among the top five states when it comes to the highest rates of reported fraud, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

Representatives from the Louisiana Department of Justice were at the Sulphur Library Thursday afternoon to spread the word about the ongoing issues of fraud. In 2023, there were 2.6 million cases of fraud in the country, with a loss of around $10 billion.

Phone calls, social media and emails are the biggest platforms were fraud is happening, the FTC says, especially when it’s disaster-related and affects the elderly. One of the event’s attendees, Katie Abshire, said she’s almost been a victim of fraud in the past.

“Once I saw money being taken out… I noticed it and I was able to stop it. During vulnerable times like a pandemic or hurricane, they take advantage of us. So just pay attention when things like this come by and you can save yourself some grief,” said Abshire.

Abshire remembers contractors going door-to-door after Hurricane Laura and said she had a feeling some were fake, showing just how common this issue can be in our area.

The Justice Department said some tips you can use to prevent fraud is always questioning anyone who calls, never giving them your name, address or banking information. They also suggest watching your bank account closely.

Another Lake Area resident, Caline Pittman, said she believes she’s been a victim of fraud recently and is urging her fellow neighbors to be suspicious when things feel too good to be true.

“Fraud happens when you’re unaware, uneducated and un-resourced… you know, you’re vulnerable… is when it can happen. So, I just encourage everyone to be informed, be aware, be cautious at all times.”

Officials are urging residents in the Lake Area to stay alert so you won’t be out of your money. If you don’t recognize who’s on the other line, don’t speak to them.
