PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The summertime is when many Americans take days off from work, but it turns out millions don’t have the time to take.

Not all full-time employees get paid for a day off, so Congressman Seth Magaziner introduced legislation in Congress to change that.

The bill was just introduced within the last couple of months and would guarantee 10 paid days off per year for all full-time workers in the U.S. in addition to sick time.

Right now, paid time off for things like vacation and special occasions is left to the employer’s discretion.

Magaziner said the bill is already gaining a lot of support along with its companion bill in the Senate.

Nearly 27 million Americans don’t currently have access to paid time off, most of them being in the hospitality and retail industries.

“It’s crazy to me that we are one of the few major countries in the world that does not guarantee paid time off for workers so it’s a very commonsense bill,” Magazier explained. “If you work full time and you do the right thing and you put in 40 hours a week you ought to be able to take 10 days off a year and not lose your job over it and not lose your pay over it.”

The legislation would apply only to full-time employees.

While it has received a lot of support in Congress and among workers’ unions, other business owners are concerned about staffing issues and bottom lines.
