Google Gemini could indeed come to the iPhone after all, with iOS 18

After a month full of news in the field of artificial intelligence, Apple confirmed at last June’s WWDC that it will expand its horizon beyond the recent integration of ChatGPT in iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. As we know, the Cupertino company is finalizing an agreement with Google to incorporate the Gemini chatbot into its operating systems, marking another significant milestone in the evolution of AI on Apple devices.

One more AI on the iOS 18 list

According to Mark Gurman’s publication, Apple has not only partnered with OpenAI, but has also been in talks with Google and Anthropic to enhance its new service, Apple Intelligence. A service, let’s remember, integrated into iOS 18 and macOS Sonoma that relies on a hybrid language-processing model that uses both on-device and online capabilities to provide answers, summaries, and image generation.

Before the announcement of iOS 18, rumors of Gemini integration in Apple systems had already appeared. At that time, the information seemed to suggest that Apple would choose one chatbot or another, but the truth is, this is not the plan. Craig Federighi, Apple’s head of software engineering, confirmed in a recent interview that the company plans to integrate more chatbots in the future, with the aim of providing a more personalized and versatile experience. Gemini would be, as far as we know, next on the list.

Meta was also on the list at one point with its LLaMA, which was going to integrate with iOS 18. However, Apple doesn’t seem to trust Facebook’s AI due to its privacy practices, so for now, we don’t expect this integration.

Up to this point, we haven’t heard any rumors about it, but the news about the integration of Gemini and negotiations with Facebook, even if they didn’t succeed, could well indicate the path ahead. Claude de Anthtopic or Mixtral de Mistral could be next on the list. If so, when iOS 18 is released, we could be able to choose our favorite AI for completing text, summarizing it, rewriting it, and for other options.

A very interesting approach, with which Apple offers us a complete catalog of services. Services– and here we enter the realm of speculation –that could very well be combined to choose the one we want at any given moment. Undoubtedly, good news for Google, for Apple, and for all of us.
