WHAT TO DO WITH MAEDA: Detroit Tigers’ Kenta Maeda has 7.26 ERA in 16 starts. Will team eat rest of his contact?

Game notes: The Detroit Tigers close out their series with the Cleveland Guardians with a matinee Thursday at Comerica Park.

Jack Flaherty is back on the mound for the Tigers after missing another start due to a back issue. Flaherty last made a start of the Tigers June 27 against the Los Angeles Angels, a game in which he allowed seven hits and five runs. It was a marked difference from the Flaherty we had seen prior.

Flaherty missed some time after his start on June 4 and didn’t return until June 15 after getting an injection in his, but if you didn’t know any better you’d have no clue he was injured. In his start on May 30, Flaherty allowed just one hit and no runs over 6⅔ innings against the Boston Red Sox. He was brilliant again June 4 vs. the Texas Rangers, allowing just two hits and no runs, but he exited the game after the fifth inning when he had thrown just 60 pitches.

It was a sign of the injury concerns to come.

Even still, when Flaherty returned June 15, he was brilliant again, holding the Houston Astros scoreless with just three hits and then giving up just one hit and one run next time out against the Chicago White Sox.

So with all of that dominance lately, it was particularly surprising when Flaherty gave up seven hits and five runs against an Angels team missing a lot of its fire power. The outing made a lot more sense, however, when the team announced Flaherty had a setback and would miss his next start.

After completing a successful bullpen on Tuesday, we will see if Flaherty can get right back to where he was before the outing against the Los Angeles Angels or if the injury will continue to bother him.
