Twisters—starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos—is expected to open big in theaters this weekend. But when is it coming to streaming?
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, Twisters is a standalone sequel to Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt’s 1996 weather disaster blockbuster Twister.
In Twisters, Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Carter, a meteorologist and former storm chaser who is running from a tragic past by relocating from Oklahoma to New York City. Ramos plays Javi, a former colleague of Kate’s who convinces her to return to Oklahoma to help his weather company as a deadly outbreak of tornadoes has been sweeping across the state.
Powell plays Tyler Owens—aka “The Tornado Wrangler”—a storm-chasing daredevil who has his own YouTube channel that chronicles his freewheeling adventures.
Twisters unofficially roared into theaters on Wednesday night with IMAX and Premium Large Format fan screenings, Deadline reports. Twisters will also be showing in Thursday night previews before it officially opens nationwide in theaters on Friday.
Right now, the way you can see Twisters is in theaters, as it is set to play on 4,000 screens this weekend including IMAX and PLF screens.
Eventually, Twisters—which is a Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. co-production that is being distributed domestically by Universal—will make its streaming video on demand debut on Peacock, which is NBC Universal subscription streaming service. Peacock has the first window to stream all films from Universal Pictures and its subsidiary Focus Features.
‘Twisters’ Will Debut On Digital Streaming First
While fans await Twisters to premiere on Peacock, the first opportunity they will have to see the movie online will be on digital streaming via premium video on demand. New PVOD titles typically can be purchased for $24.99 or can be rented for $19.99 for 48 hours on such digital platforms as Prime Video, AppleTV+, VUDU and Google Play.
Like any most new films in theaters, Twisters’ digital streaming debut will largely depend on how well the film does at the box office. Using a pair of Universal releases as examples, the studio’s action romance The Fall Guy—starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt—fell far short of its projected box office take when it was released in theaters on May 3.
No doubt driven by the film’s disappointing returns, The Fall Guy debuted on PVOD on May 21, a mere 18 days after its theatrical debut. Universal’s horror thriller Abigail—which was released in theaters on April 19—had virtually the same 18-day theatrical to PVOD release pattern, as it debuted on digital streaming on May 7.
Twisters, meanwhile, is tracking to have a solid opening at the worldwide box office this weekend. Deadline reports that Twisters is expected to pull in $50 million in North American theaters from Friday to Sunday. Combined with an estimated $45 million to $50 million in international ticket sales will bring the film close to $100 million at the worldwide box office, the publication noted.
Meanwhile, Variety projects that Twisters will make a bit more domestically with a $55 million opening. The industry trade publication reported that Twisters had a production budget of $155 million before prints and advertising costs.
If Twisters can somehow replicate the same sort of financial success that the Universal Pictures-distributed Kung Fu Panda 4 had, then viewers can expect to wait at least four weeks before the film is released on PVOD. Released in theaters on March 8, Kung Fu Panda 4 made its digital streaming debut on April 9.
If Twisters follows that model, then viewers can expect to be able to purchase or rent the film on PVOD sometime between Tuesday, August 20 and Friday, August 23. PVOD releases for bigger films typically happen on Tuesdays or Fridays.

How Soon Will ‘Twisters’ Begin Streaming On Peacock?
Universal releases typically take 90 days from the day they open in theaters until they premiere on Peacock. For example, the vampire thriller Abigail—which opened in theaters on April 19—will make its streaming video on demand debut on Peacock on Friday, July 19.
Using that release pattern, viewers may be able to stream Twisters on Peacock as early as Friday, October 18.
It’s important to remember, though, that Abigail underperformed for Universal in theaters, which is why it was fast-tracked to PVOD.
Instead, Twisters will likely follow the same release theatrical-to-Peacock pattern as the 2023 big-budget action film Fast X. Released in theaters on May 19, 2023, Fast X made its Peacock debut about four months later, on September 15, 2023. Using that model, Twisters would not be available on Peacock until Tuesday, November 19.
Twisters plays in previews Thursday night before opening in theaters nationwide on Friday.
