Investigators search for ‘persons of interest’ in Lexington County stabbing, house fire

LEXINGTON, S.C. (WIS) – WIS News 10 has learned Lexington County Sheriff’s Department investigators have identified persons of interest in the case of a man found dead following a weekend house fire.

According to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher, 38-year-old Caldwell Melton Motley Jr. died from multiple stab wounds on Saturday night.

Investigators said they found Motley in the house on the 200 block of Oak Ridge Lane in Lexington following the fire.

Another man, who’s identity is not known, was found in a detached garage in the backyard. Authorities say he is expected to survive.

A sheriff’s department spokesman would not provide specifics but said investigators are now pursuing what they describe as “good leads” in this case.

WIS News 10 learned through LCSD investigators that Motley and the other victim were roommates.

A spokesperson would not identify the persons of interest in the case, but said the department have no reason to believe there is any threat to the neighborhood.

Leslie Queen lives three houses down from the scene. She said she and her husband knew the owner of the home, but in passing, and were shocked to hear what happened.

“Honestly, we were just neighbors. I didn’t personally know him, I just said hey whenever he was, in passing, whenever he was walking his dog. So other than that, no we didn’t have a personal relationship,” said Queen.

Deputies have been posted at the house since Monday with crime scene tape wrapped around the house.

Matthew Queen said that the presence has been welcomed in the neighborhood.

“There’s been a continued presence and it’s been very safe here. I’m a father of a child and we’re right next to an elementary school, there’s a lot of elderly people in the neighborhood, a lot of young children, but it has felt very safe here,” said Queen.

WIS News 10 checked property records and Motley is not the homeowner of this house.

We asked LCSD if the homeowner was the surviving victim and a department spokesman would not confirm saying they do not disclose names of victims.
