GIBBON, Neb. (KSNB) – A Buffalo County home is a total loss and a family pet was killed following a house fire Tuesday night.
The Gibbon Volunteer Fire Department, along with Shelton and Kearney Volunteer Fire Departments, battled the fire near Navaho Road and 39th Road.
They responded to the home northwest of Gibbon around 8:45 p.m. and remained on scene until about 2 a.m. Wednesday.
Gibbon Fire Chief Rick Brown said it’s believed that a lightning strike caused the fire but it’s still being investigated.
He said a family was living in the home but were not there when the fire started. Sadly, a family dog died in the fire.
The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on Facebook “our hearts go out to the family during this difficult time.”
They shared their gratitude to the firefighters from Gibbon, Shelton, and Kearney for their swift and courageous efforts.
“Your commitment to our community does not go unnoticed,” the post added.
The fire department was back on the scene Wednesday morning working to put out hot spots.
